Just outside Arlington, Virginia, H.R.G. passes some construction workers on the highway and smells a rat. Explaining that there will surely be a roadblock ahead, H.R.G. pulls over his rental car and sends Angela and Claire to walk into Washington D.C. on foot. Warning them to make sure that Nathan is really Nathan and not Sylar, H.R.G. drives off to get captured and buy them some time. Meanwhile, Matt rides a bus bound for D.C.


With Nathan still unconscious, Sylar picks himself up off the floor and pulls Danko’s knife out of his head. When Danko draws his pistol, Sylar paralyzes him against a wall to explain that shape shifting has its advantages, enabling him to move the position of the “off switch” at the back of his head. Danko warns that his team will arrive any second, but Sylar’s plan is already underway. Hiding Nathan in the bathroom, Sylar explains that he’ll kill him later, after he absorbs all his memories with the ability that Angela Petrelli fed him like a snack.

Sylar has a date with destiny. The President is slated to give a speech tomorrow at the Stanton Hotel. Senator Petrelli, a.k.a. Sylar will meet him directly afterwards, just to shake his hand, thus becoming the most powerful man in the world. Danko tells Sylar to kill him now, because there’s no way he’s going to let it happen. Sylar’s not worried. As agents run down the hall, Sylar morphs into Danko, takes his gun and kills a few men. Releasing his hold on Danko, Sylar morphs into Taub to hold Danko at gunpoint — this round is over.

Forty-eight hours prior to Nathan’s live press conference, Agent Taub wakes up in his Washington, D.C. apartment. Taub looks in the mirror and morphs back into Sylar, pulling a bloody tooth out of his mouth. Something’s not right. Meanwhile, Matt calls Janice to inform her that Baby Matt is safe, and he’ll bring him back to her directly. Hiro and Ando want Matt to stay and help them bring down Building 26, but now that he’s a father, Matt’s afraid — afraid of missing Baby Matt’s childhood.


Hiro and Ando figure they can’t argue with Matt; he needs to go win back his family. But when they ask Matt for the location of Building 26, he refuses. Danko and his men are killers, and he can’t live with the prospect of putting Hiro and Ando in danger. Besides what’s their plan? How can they possibly bring down Danko? Thanking the dynamic duo for saving his life, Matt drives off to California. When Ando suggests that Matt might be right, Hiro insists that a hero never concedes defeat.

Danko meets Sylar, upset that one of his analysts spotted him on a surveillance camera. The only way this will work is if Sylar remains in Taub’s body. Sylar explains that something is wrong: he went to sleep as himself, woke up as Taub and found an extra tooth in his mouth. He’s shape shifting so much that his DNA isn’t reassembling correctly. Besides Taub is a nothing, and Sylar doesn’t like being nothing. Danko warns that if Sylar stays in his own body, he’ll have no choice but to hunt and kill him. Sylar obliges, turning himself back into Taub, but when Danko leaves, he carves “I Am Sylar” into the flesh of his arm. Of course, it heals instantly.

Dawn is breaking over Coyote Sands and Peter has had it with digging up graves. Why is Angela making them do this? Nathan insists Angela will share her reasons in due time, prompting Peter to climb out of the grave he’s been unearthing in disgust. Claire catches up to ask Peter to give Nathan a chance. Nathan knows what he’s done, and is carrying enough guilt for all of them; he needs their support. Peter scoffs — Claire has fallen victim to Nathan’s charm — and takes off to talk to his mother.

Peter reminds Angela that she said they were going to find her sister. No one knew Angela even had a sister! Angela flashes back to 1961, when she was 16. Along with 10-year-old sister Alice, the Shaw family arrives at Coyote Sands Relocation Center by bus. Gentle Dr. Chandra Suresh greets the Shaws and gives them a tour of the family-friendly facilities. He escorts Angela and Alice to a dormitory, explaining that their parents will be staying across the quad. When Angela spies armed soldiers, Chandra explains that this is not a prison — the soldiers are there to protect them.

A thunderstorm brews as the Shaw sisters get settled. Suddenly the door opens to reveal the “official” welcoming committee — teenaged Charles Deveaux, Daniel Linderman and Bobby Bishop. When Angela points out that boys aren’t allowed in the girls bunk, Charles claims that Bobby wanted to tell Angela how beautiful she is. Bobby protests, so Charles smiles and explains they just wanted to say hi and leave a welcome gift of milk and cookies.

At Building 26′s temporary morgue, a suspicious H.R.G. unzips a body bag to check out what Danko insists is Sylar’s naked corpse. With a six-inch spike still lodged in the back of his head and no pulse or body temperature, Danko claims Sylar will never get up again. Danko taunts H.R.G., crowing over his kill after only a few months on the job. Maybe H.R.G. didn’t want to catch Sylar. Their conversation is interrupted by an agent who informs them that Sandra is waiting for H.R.G. downstairs.

Somewhere in Ohio, Hiro and Ando drive east on Highway 40 with Baby Matt. Hiro is determined to unite father and son, but his plan comes to a halt when the baby cries and the car suddenly stops working. Meanwhile, Matt and Mohinder are holed up in a in a Washington D.C. motel. Mohinder has finally arranged for safe passage to India, and intends to leave by boat from New York City. Matt refuses his invitation to come with. He’s been trailing Danko and is set on revenge. He doesn’t want to kill Danko, but he does want him to feel the kind of hurt he’s caused for so many others.

H.R.G. meets Sandra in a hallway. Sandra is furious. Even though she can’t believe a word H.R.G. says, she needs proof that Claire is safe. H.R.G. is distracted, further offending Sandra. He is just explaining that he thinks Sylar isn’t really dead, when Danko pops up to introduce himself to Sandra, who isn’t falling for his oily overtures. H.R.G. pleads with Sandra to return to Costa Verde, but Sandra insists that she will be staying at the Regency until she lays eyes on Claire.

As agents ransack her bedroom, Claire is safe in Nathan’s arms, on her way to Patzcuaro, Mexico, where they hole up in a one-star motel. Nathan’s plan is to keep Claire safe. Now that he’s been exposed, her free pass has evaporated, but even Danko can’t reach across the border. Since they have no money, Claire decides to go for a walk, promising to meet Nathan later at the cantina down the street.

Angela and Peter touch down in a Manhattan alley, just as it starts to rain. Angela thanks Peter for acting as her guardian angel, but he demands answers. Exhausted, Angela heads for sanctuary in a Catholic cathedral. Peter toys with leaving, but thinks the better of it and follows his mother into the church. Meanwhile, Danko presides over another crime scene. Three agents have been shot in the head in the Arlington, Virginia apartment of James Martin, a high school geometry teacher.

Danko admits that he has no idea of Martin’s ability. His DNA was listed in the national database and set off a red flag. H.R.G. chides Danko for sending men in blind; each ability requires a different tactic. Is Danko so desperate to chalk up a win that he’s cutting corners? Danko silences H.R.G., reminding him of his recent failure to capture Rebel.

At home, Danko is in the bathroom shaving when an alarm goes off. Someone has opened the front door. Wiping the shaving cream off his face, Danko grabs a pistol to investigate, only to find Doyle strung up in his living room, in an approximation of his puppet theater. A red bow bears an anonymous tag reading “my gift to you.” Although Doyle surely looks dead, he inhales noisily on his journey back to consciousness.

It’s pouring in Manhattan, and Angela’s limo is snarled in traffic. Unaware of the bits of toilet paper stuck to his face, H.R.G. holds a newspaper over his head and ducks into the limo, remarking that it’s coming down in all sorts of ways. Angela agrees; this should be their last conversation. There’s a lot riding on the man who was too distracted to pack his umbrella on a cloudy day. Handing H.R.G. her umbrella, Angela sends him off into the deluge, as he warns her not to go home.

Danko leads Mohinder through a door marked “Human Resources” to behold a room full of unconscious bodies. It’s Danko’s way of stopping people with abilities. Mohinder examines Daphne, who’s dying; there’s nothing Mohinder can do to help her. Danko confesses that he doesn’t want Mohinder to help. Furthermore, the only reason he let Mohinder walk through the door? Much easier than carrying him. Mohinder is tasered to the ground as Danko orders another bed prepared for Tracy. Little does he know, she’s been honing her ability while in captivity.

Claire is disgusted to behold Doyle in her kitchen. Sandra points out that agents are parked outside, but Doyle knows that Rebel sent them on a wild goose chase. He’s already figured out that Claire has a free pass — how can she turn her back on her own kind? Doyle pinches Claire and Sandra’s mouths closed so he can explain what it’s like to be on the run. Teary-eyed, Doyle releases the women and heads for the door. He’s not going to force them to help — that’s not who he is anymore.

When Danko returns to Building 26, Nathan demands to know where he’s been. Danko is just defending his decision not to release Matt and Daphne, when video of suicide bomber Matt comes over the wire. Nathan rushes off, and within seconds is pushing his way to Matt’s side, convincing the SWAT team that he can talk him down within five minutes.

Nathan explains that Danko acted without sanction, inviting Matt to read his mind to confirm he had nothing to do with it. Drugged, Matt can’t read Nathan’s mind, and refuses to trust him. Meanwhile, Danko watches live news coverage of the crisis from Building 26. How did Nathan get there so fast? He orders an agent to activate the bomb strapped to Matt, intending to take both Matt and Nathan out in one blow.

Claire brings a sandwich to Alex, who’s still hiding in her bedroom. Claire has stolen Sandra’s grocery money to buy Alex a ticket to Albuquerque, where he can start a new life. Alex is skeptical; Claire’s not Harriet Tubman, and the government is probably watching right now. When Sandra knocks on the door looking for her missing grocery money, it doesn’t take long for her to discover Alex in the closet.

H.R.G. keeps an eye on the exterior of his old home in Building 26. He tells Danko that Claire is a big girl, and can live with the consequences of her decisions. Danko orders his team to pursue Matt and Peter, priority one: shoot to kill. Nathan objects, but Danko reminds him that Peter made it personal by putting a gun to his head. Pointing out his recent kidnapping, H.R.G. backs Danko, as Peter and Matt’s location comes in.

At Isaac’s loft, Peter pulls Matt out of an all-night painting trance. Matt claims that the only thing that matters is getting Daphne back; they’re going to fight this war one life at a time. So, where is she? A window pops up on a computer, as Rebel provides the address of Building 26 — and the tip that agents are at the door. Peter and Matt argue over trusting Rebel, but rush off, as Rebel is quickly proven correct.
