Carlos -- the walking robot shopping cart is a kinetic sculpture project at the University of New Mexico. It looks weird.

This College kinetic sculpture project consist of 2 car batteries, 1 12 volt electric motor, bicycle chains, rc controller and servo, metal hanger and a shopping cart.

An overall details in building the Walking Robot Shopping Cart:

An electric motor was used to drive the rear axle of the shopping cart. The same motor turned a bicycle camshaft which pulled slowly, then released quickly 2 cables.

The two cables wrapped around pulleys and attached to an aluminum frame at the knee joint.

A spring helped keep tension in the drive chains. The radio control consisted of 2 channels. 1 would be a simple switch (forward/stop). The second was connected to a H-bridge constructed from 2 Double Throw Double Pole switches. The switches were made from wire and glue and a coat-hanger.

I don’t know how to describe this one, but apparently it’s a fire-breathing robo dog that is driven like a motorcycle. Yep, and it roams the streets of London.

It even has a name – Larry. Built by a group of people in a Mutoid Waste Company.

This walking robot was made out of spare parts and has a Citroen 2CV engine fitted inside the metal frames. It is constructed to able walk on its front two legs, Larry has two tires stitched in place of the hind legs.

For the eyes, Larry has a radar detecting device from an airplane scrapyard and some industrial machines parts for the other body components. And was completed in just a month.

If you can get through the cell phone text speak, you’ll probably enjoy this cool tutorial on how to build a cell phone controlled robot. This bot decodes the key tones, similar to the automated phone systems we’ve all experienced. It uses a chip called a MT8870 DTMF decoder to translate the signal for the Atmega 16 controller. The circuit diagram is pretty hard to read, maybe we missed a downloadable one somewhere. The source code is available.

The guy in the video, Dan Dzoan, is no slouch himself… He was recently the world record holder in one-handed Rubik’s Cube speed solving. He may not be quite as fast as the robot he built (what irony!), but I’m not sure if the bot really counts as one handed, and it certainly can’t top this.

Researchers have been working heavily into cyborg creatures in order to reduce the cost of developing miniature robots.  “The motivation is simple: why labour for years to build robots that imitate the ways animals move when you can just plug into living creatures and hijack systems already optimised by millions of years of evolution?”  DARPA has heavily funded research into this kind of field, possibly hoping for a bug which can buzz around a room, spying on inhabitants.

The Ripsaw MS1 is an unmanned ground vehicle built by two brothers in Maine. The tracked vehicle can go 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with an 80mph top speed. In its current form, it has a 2000 pound capacity, which opens the possibility for many different types of weapon systems. Control is provided by two people: one driver and one gunner. They work in independent remote stations. The Ripsaw could potentially be used in any application normally reserved for a tank. It could lead a charge without putting soldiers at risk.

Scientists have created the first ‘humanoid’ robot that can mimic the facial expressions and lip movements of a human being.

Named ‘Jules’, it can automatically copy the movements, which are picked up by a video camera and mapped on to the tiny electronic motors in his skin.

Jules is a disembodied androgynous robotic head.

The robotic head looks so realistic, it can grin and grimace and furrow its brow.

And It even speaks!

Jules mimics the expressions by converting the video image into digital commands that make the robot’s servos and motors produce mirrored movements.

And it all happens in real time as the robot can interpret the commands at 25 frames per second.

The project, called ‘Human-Robot Interaction’, was devised at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), run by the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol.

Jules is the first humanoid robot who can realistically mimic a real person’s expressions merely by watching their face.

But I like the “researchers rarely shower” and “destroy humanity” comments! Hilarious!

This one is just amazing. So, kudos to the scientists, great job!

Now, we are one step closer of creating an ultimate humanoid robot -- to wipe out humanity(?).
